Recipes: Kokum Dal

Dosha benefits: Pitta

Ingredients:

  • Kokum 4-5 pieces
  • Tur Dal ½ cup
  • Fenugreek seeds 1 tbsp
  • White pumpkin 100 gms
  • Red chilies 4
  • Ginger ½ inch piece
  • Green chilies 2
  • Turmeric Powder ¼ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • For Seasoning:
    • Gingelly Oil 1 tsp
    • Mustard seeds ¼ tsp
    • Fenugreek ½ tsp
    • Asafetida 2 pinches
    • Curry leaves 2 sprigs

Recipe:

  • Soak the dal and fenugreek seeds the previous night. 
  • Add turmeric powder to the soaked dal and pressure cook.
  • Cut the pumpkin into 1-inch pieces. 
  • Soak kokum in water for 10 minutes. 
  • Grind green chilies and ginger to a smooth paste.
  • Add vegetable, ginger-chili paste, broken red chilies to the cooked dal and boil for few minutes. 
  • Add soaked Kokum in the end (Do not squeeze).
  • Allow it to boil for some more time and then add salt. 
  • Heat oil, season mustard seeds, fenugreek, curry leaves, Asafetida and pour on top of the dal.
  • Mix well and serve with cooked rice or with Indian bread.

Ayurveda Tip:

  • Kokum is good for people dealing with bowel problems, sores, ear infections, menstruation delays, intestinal parasites and inflammatory issues
