In the 1980s, I began my professional nursing career in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Here, I met the sickest people in the hospital. Daily, I wondered, “How could a person go from being whole and healthy to lying in a hospital bed hooked up to a ventilator, with tubes and monitors?” Did people not get any indication of an impending health tragedy? Couldn’t this situation have been averted? I loved my work and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. However, I had my heart and soul set on a career that helped people avoid such grave illnesses in the first place. I wanted to move into prevention so I got my Masters in Exercise Physiology and began helping people enhance their health through movement and exercise.
