Use of Sida Cordifola in Ayurveda

Bala aka Sida Cordifola is arguably Ayurveda’s most widely used and prescribed herb. Its origins can be traced back to India and Sri Lanka, with its stem and roots being the salient part of the plant used in preparing Ayurvedic medicine. It is sweet in taste and possesses cooling energy.

Bala in Sanskrit literally translates to strength, which is perhaps directly attributed to the benefit it offers to us. Bala owing to its stimulating and anabolic nature is most often used in Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapies. Bala’s therapeutic use can result in building muscle tone as well as increasing one’s overall strength. All parts of the Bala plant possess various medicinal properties, especially the root and leaves.

1. Energy Drink

A concoction made of honey, Bala with ghee infused can prove to be an extremely reinvigorating energy drink. It can be had in the morning, or in the evening when you are feeling low on energy. Alternatively, you can also try a hot drink made of ginger, Bala, and whole milk every morning when you wake up. Please note that we do not recommend this if you have excessive toxins or Kapha in your body.

2. For Low Libido 

If you are a man suffering from low libido, we recommend you try the following recipe:

  • Bring half a cup of milk and one cup of water to a boil.
  • Once done, reduce the heat to simmer and add half tsp of Bala, half tsp of Ashwagandha, and half tsp of ghee and let the drink simmer

Have this drink every morning when you wake up.

Alternatively, for women, we recommend the following recipe:

  • Bring half a cup of milk and one cup of water to a boil
  • Once done, reduce the heat to simmer and add half tsp of Bala, half teaspoon of Shatavari, and half tsp of ghee and let the drink simmer

This drink can be taken every morning as soon as you wake up.

3. To Relieve Body Ache

We recommend applying Bala oil on your entire body and massaging it every night before you go to sleep. Leave the oil on overnight and wash it with only water in the morning. If the pain is severe, we recommend trying other oils like Ashwagandha and Jatamansi in combination with Bala for better results.

4. To Relieve Fever

Here is a recipe for helping relieve fever:

  • We recommend boiling 2 cups of water
  • Reduce the heat and proceed to add one tsp of Bala, 1 tsp of Tulsi, half a tsp of Ginger, and a pinch of black pepper to the concoction
  • Simmer the resulting liquid and have it at least thrice a day to see results.

5. For Respiratory Relief

Here is a simple recipe for respiratory relief:

  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil
  • Reduce the heat and proceed to add one tsp of Bala, 1 tsp of vasa, half a tsp of ginger, and 5 Pippali fruits to the concoction
  • Simmer the resulting liquid

You can have it at least thrice a day to find reprieve from cold, wheezing and asthmatic symptoms.
